How to get Paraguay Residency?

Paraguay is often seen as a hidden gem for expats looking for a second residency. But before you pack your bags, there are a few things you should know. In this article, I’ll walk you through the residency process in Paraguay, the challenges you might face, and the advantages it offers. I’ve spent the last four years in Latin America, and after obtaining my Paraguay residency in 2021, I’ve learned a lot about how it all works.

Why Consider Paraguay Residency?

Paraguay has become a popular choice for expats, and it’s easy to see why. It’s one of the easiest second residencies to obtain worldwide, and the costs are relatively low. If you’re into flag theory, Paraguay is an excellent addition to your setup. Plus, it comes with significant tax advantages, especially when paired with a U.S. LLC or similar structure.

However, things have changed since I got my residency. The process is still accessible, but there are new steps you need to be aware of.

My Journey to Paraguay Residency

After spending over a year in Paraguay, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of what it takes to secure residency. The rest of my time, I’ve spent in various other countries across South America. This is what makes Paraguay residency so appealing—you can travel long-term while keeping your residency intact. I’ve been driving my Paraguayan-registered Toyota Land Cruiser Prado across South America, learning more about life in Mercosur and the broader region. The flexibility and freedom this residency offers are unmatched.

Recent Changes in the Residency Process

When I applied for residency, certain requirements were in place that have since been removed. For example, you no longer need a health check-up or proof of solvency and academic degrees. However, new regulations now require applicants to first obtain a two-year temporary residency before applying for permanent residency.

Documents You Need

To apply for residency, you’ll need to gather several key documents:

  • Birth Certificate
  • Police Record
  • Marriage Certificate (if applicable)

These documents must be apostilled, which can be a challenge if your country doesn’t support this process. Additionally, all documents must be presented on the day of your application.

Challenges to Expect

One of the first hurdles you may face is getting these documents apostilled. This can be a complex process depending on your home country. Another challenge is entering Paraguay. A tourist visa is sufficient for the residency process, but under new regulations, even citizens of visa-free countries must request a tourist visa upon arrival. Some nationalities may find it difficult to obtain this visa.

The Application Process

Once you’re in Paraguay, plan to stay at least a week to complete the residency application. It’s advisable to work with a residency helper who can assist you in translating documents and preparing for the application day. Typically, after two working days, you’ll be ready for your application day, where you’ll visit various government offices in Asunción.

By the end of the day, you’ll receive an application confirmation. With this confirmation, you’re allowed to stay in Paraguay until you receive your residency card, even if your visa expires. You can also leave Paraguay and arrange to have your documents sent to you via priority mail.

Costs of the Paraguay Residency

The entire process, including fees and the cost of a residency helper, ranges between $1,800 and $2,000 USD. Payment is usually made in $100 bills in person, but depending on the residency helper you can make arrangements to also pay in Bitcoin (BTC).
